Reparations

Reparations

The National Black Justice Coalition believes in efforts to remedy past racial discrimination and address the vestiges and lingering effects of racial bias against Black people.

The enslavement of Black Americans prior to the end of the Civil War in 1865 violated the constitutional rights of African Americans.  After the formal abolition of slavery, Black people continued to suffer at the hands of legally-sanctioned racial segregation and discrimination.

The enormous economic contribution of free and below-market black labor to white society was a powerful engine of America’s growth and prosperity, but Black Americans have never been appropriately compensated for the labor of their ancestors.

The issue of reparations has become increasingly visible in recent years with the legislative efforts of various governments that are attempting to address the issue.  NBJC supports the movement for reparations for African-Americans.
