Gun Control
Gun Control
The National Black Justice Coalition respects the rights of hunters and lawful gun owners to own handguns, rifles and other reasonable weapons. However, we also recognize the right of citizens to live in safe, secure neighborhoods protected by well-trained police officers. As such, we believe that cities, states and the federal government have the right and the duty to enact responsible gun control laws.
We support laws that restrict access to weapons for minors, convicted felons and those with a history of mental illness. We also support restrictions on the types of weapons that can be sold, purchased or owned. Given the high levels of violence in the Black community, we are particularly outraged by “gun show loopholes” and other efforts to evade existing gun control laws. We are deeply concerned about so-called “cop-killer bullets” and other weapons that serve no reasonable purpose for self-defense or hunting. We support child safety locks on guns to protect the safety of families with children.
