NBJC Black History LGBT Profiles: Day 28

Angela Harvey

Angela Harvey is affectionately known for her dynamic, humorous and engaging LGBT focused workshops, retreats, and DVDs.  Her Let's TALK workshops vary in titles from "Will the Real Lesbian Please Stand Up?"; "That's Not Love, That's Stupid"  or "Same Sex, Different Everything Else."

Angela was born in Cleveland, Ohio but now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.  She earned her undergraduate degree from Cleveland State University and her Master's degree from Case Western Reserve University both in Cleveland, Ohio.  She is employed by Sierra Health Services as a Case Manager. Although social work is dear to her heart she discovered her passion for speaking and personal growth after founding Let's T.A.L.K. – Together Acquire Lasting Knowledge in 2002.

"I happened to be vacationing in Washington DC with my family in 2002 and submitted a workshop proposal that was accepted by DC Pride Board.  I stood in amazement to a standing room only crowd listening and wanting to hear more of what I had to say. More importantly they were bursting at the seams with questions and knowledge. I knew in that moment that I would be empowering folks until the day I die.  In that moment Let's TALK was being created."

When Angela created Let's TALK she did so with a sound mission to facilitate personal enhancement, empowerment and enlightenment by providing dialogue and guidance through presentations and other communicative means.  Through this mission Angela has been dedicated and committed to working within the LGBT community.  Since founding Let's TALK she has worked with over 25+ LGBT organizations along with a host of companies, universities and religious institutions.

Let's TALK has also sponsored 2 women's retreats and a couples retreat.  Angela is also a monthly columnist and contributing writer for QVegas, a local LGBT magazine in Las Vegas. In addition she has appeared on numerous radio talk programs.  Further, Angela continues to empower others through her Growth by Phone, a group conference call focusing on a variety of personal growth, relationship and corporate issues and topics.

"I created and initiated both of these programs after hearing from numerous people that said they wanted more. There were people who told me they received more in one of my workshops than they had in months of therapy. That was a WOW for me and I knew then that I had to do more than just show up in a city once a year."

Angela also provides empowerment and growth through several self-produced DVD's.  Some of her DVD titles include "Excuse Me, Have You Seen My Happiness?"; "What's Love Got to Do With It?" and "Are You Understanding the Words That Are Coming Out of My Mouth?"  She is also working on her first book tentatively title "Don't Say I Didn't Tell You!"

Angela Harvey was also a founding Las Vegas HRC Steering Committee member which to date is one of the most successful Steering committees in the United States. She continues to work with HRC providing educational workshops at several Black Pride Celebrations and working to gain support for gay marriage.

Angela and her partner Kim Bowman were married on February 17, 2008 at Winter Explosion in upstate New York. They decided to get married there after Kim proposed a year earlier during one of Angela's workshops. The wedding was attended by family, friends and Winter Explosion guests and officiated by Rev. Abena McCray of Unity Fellowship Church in Washington, DC.

Angela is driven by passion and fueled by love for what she does and is an asset to the entire LGBT community.  “I love what I do and I do it with passion.” For more information about Angela Harvey visit:
