NBJC Black History LGBT Profiles: Day 27

Leslie Herod

Raised by a mother serving in the Armed Forces, Leslie Herod learned early the finer points of discipline and hard work.  Rebelling from a family history of military officers, Leslie decided to become a different type of leader.  Using the skills taught by her mother Leslie went on to become an active member in the progressive community, and chose to attend University of Colorado Boulder.

Serving on numerous campus boards, Leslie worked to create a campus climate that is inclusive of all students regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, gender or ability.  Elected by her colleagues, Leslie earned the tile of the President of the Student Union's Legislative Council. Taking her work to a national level, Leslie was chosen to represent the African-American, student voice by the United States Student Association, lobbying Congress and traveling to different campuses teaching students how to effectively organize.

Immediately after college, Leslie began her professional career in public policy.  She began as an intern for the House Majority office, and served as the aide to Representative Rosemary Marshall.  Perhaps her most challenging move, Leslie served as nonpartisan Legislative Council Staff for the General Assembly.  Specializing in State Veterans and Military Affairs, and higher education reform, Leslie was able to study both sides of fence, and ultimately landed back on the left.

Leslie was formerly the Outreach Director for the Coloradoan's for Fairness and Equality, Colorado's domestic partnership initiative. She also served on the Ritter for Governor African-American steering committee as its only young representative.  Leslie is now a policy advisor for Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., addressing such concerns as juvenile justice, veterans’ affairs, behavioral health care, child welfare, work force equality, and anti-poverty initiatives.  While making inroads in the community and with the support trailblazers before her, Leslie is committed to continue being an effective voice for the citizens of Colorado.
